Australia's Coach Speculates on Stokes' Return
Andrew McDonald, the coach of the Australian cricket team, has expressed his belief that Ben Stokes, the former captain of England, might reconsider his retirement and participate in the upcoming Ashes series next year. Stokes announced his retirement from Test cricket following England's defeat against New Zealand last month, leaving the team in seventh place in the ICC World Test Championship standings. They are preparing for a home series against Pakistan, as reported by the ICC.
Recently, Stokes has made a comeback in England's domestic 50-over competition, playing for Durham and achieving impressive scores of 108 and 73 in consecutive matches.
McDonald's Thoughts on Stokes' Future
While McDonald stated he lacks insider knowledge regarding Stokes' international career, he mentioned that it wouldn't surprise him if the former England captain decided to return for the Ashes. He remarked, "The fairytale would be that he comes back out of retirement and takes on one more Ashes, generating significant hype along the way," during an interview on an Australian radio station, as cited by the ICC.
He further added that promoting the series would benefit from Stokes' potential return.
Stokes' Retirement and Future Ambiguity
Stokes had previously returned from ODI retirement in 2022 to play for England during their unsuccessful title defense at the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. However, he has recently reaffirmed his commitment to his retirement decision, even if approached by team management in the future.
The uncertainty surrounding England's Test team has intensified following the exit of Brendon McCullum, Stokes' long-time ally, as head coach. McDonald mentioned he is closely observing the situation as the next Ashes series approaches.

McDonald expressed his belief that Stokes still possesses a lot of cricketing talent. He stated, "It will be fascinating to watch. I think whoever the new head coach is will likely have a conversation with him."
He added, "We don't know the exact reasons behind Stokes' retirement; there hasn't been any official statement clarifying it. He may have simply decided to step away from Test cricket, or there could be a chance for the new head coach to persuade him to return. Regardless, if this is the end, he has had a remarkable career, leaving a significant impact on the game that he can reflect on positively."
Upcoming Ashes 2027 Schedule
Recently, England announced the schedule for the Ashes 2027, with the first match set to take place at Trent Bridge in Nottingham starting June 18. The series will continue with additional Tests at Lord's, Edgbaston, The Rose Bowl, and The Oval.
