Controversy Erupts Over Security Lapses During President Murmu's Bengal Visit
Security Concerns During Presidential Visit
The recent visit of President Droupadi Murmu to West Bengal has sparked significant controversy regarding alleged lapses in security and protocol. The Union Home Secretary, Govind Mohan, has requested a detailed report from the state's Chief Secretary, Nandini Chakraborty, on the matter. The central government has raised specific concerns, particularly regarding the absence of the Chief Minister and the DGP during the President's arrival and departure, a lack of water in restrooms, litter along the route, and the accountability of the district administration.
President Expresses Discontent
During her visit, President Murmu openly expressed her dissatisfaction with the arrangements. She questioned why Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not come to meet her, expressing surprise at the lack of attendance at the event. The President remarked, 'Typically, the Chief Minister should welcome the President upon arrival, but she was absent. Perhaps the state government does not prioritize the welfare of tribal communities, which is why she was kept away from the event.' Nonetheless, she referred to Mamata Banerjee as her younger sister.
Mamata Banerjee Responds
In response to these allegations, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to social media to clarify the situation. She stated that the district administration had already informed the President's secretariat about the shortcomings in the arrangements. The Chief Minister emphasized that according to the approved plan, the Mayor of Siliguri and the District Magistrate welcomed the President, and she was not part of that plan. Banerjee accused the BJP of misusing the office of the President for political gain.
Prime Minister Calls Incident Shameful
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the entire incident as extremely unfortunate and shameful. He stated that humiliating a tribal President is disheartening for those who believe in democracy and the empowerment of tribal communities. The Prime Minister stressed that the office of the President should be above politics and deserves respect.
Rising Tensions Ahead of Elections
With upcoming elections in Bengal, tensions between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress have escalated. In response to the Prime Minister's remarks, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee stated that when the entire system and central agencies align against Bengal, the state stands stronger in opposition.
