Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Faces Backlash Over Controversial Video

Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has found himself at the center of a significant controversy due to a video circulating on social media. In this footage, a man is seen holding a glass of alcohol in front of images of revered Sikh Gurus and other respected figures. Many have accused him of splashing alcohol on these sacred images, leading to outrage from Sikh organizations and opposition parties. They argue that this act is a grave insult to Sikhism, as it is considered highly inappropriate to have alcohol near holy places or religious images.

Akal Takht's Major Decision

The issue escalated to the Akal Takht, the highest religious authority in the Sikh community. A committee of five members was formed to investigate the matter. A key question was whether the video was authentic and if the individual depicted was indeed Bhagwant Mann. Mann has claimed that the video is fake and was created using computer technology. However, the Akal Takht dismissed his assertion, declaring the video genuine and labeling Mann as 'Guru Dhokhi' and 'against the Khalsa Panth.'

Questions Raised on Forensic Reports

Following the Akal Takht's ruling, the Punjab government presented several investigative reports. They asserted that these reports indicated the video was fabricated and that the person in it was not the Chief Minister. The Aam Aadmi Party also rejected the Akal Takht's decision based on these claims. However, subsequent police investigations revealed that the reports provided by the Punjab government were themselves fraudulent, as the laboratories cited had no verifiable existence.

Police Action and New Allegations

In connection with this case, Gurugram police have filed an FIR and arrested several individuals for allegedly creating false reports. There are suspicions that some members of the Punjab police may be involved. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's statements have shifted; he initially referred to the video as AI-generated but later claimed that the individual in the video was someone else wearing a mask resembling him. This has led to accusations against the government of deceiving both the public and religious institutions.

Punjab's New and Strict Law

The controversy has intensified, particularly because the Punjab government recently passed a stringent law aimed at preventing religious disrespect. The state's governor, Gulab Chand Kataria, has approved this new legislation, which stipulates penalties of up to ten years in prison or life imprisonment, along with fines of up to 2.5 million rupees for insulting or conspiring against the Guru Granth Sahib.

Legal and Political Implications

Opposition parties are now questioning whether the same strict actions will be taken against the Chief Minister if the allegations against him are proven true. Legally, the situation is somewhat complicated, as the new law primarily addresses insults to the Guru Granth Sahib rather than the defamation of images. Additionally, any action would require legal proof that the individual in the video is indeed the Chief Minister. This has sparked a political debate about whether this law is applicable only to the general public or if it also extends to high-ranking officials.
