Controversial Illustration Sparks Outrage
Before D.K. Shivakumar's inauguration as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, a Kannada newspaper stirred controversy by depicting the Congress leader as Lord Shiva. This Bengaluru-based publication is now facing backlash, with many critics accusing it of blasphemy and political sycophancy. The illustration featured Shivakumar adorned with matted hair, dressed in a tiger skin, and holding a trident and damru, which was shared by the newspaper's editor, Vishweshwar Bhat, on Wednesday.
Immediate Backlash on Social Media
The portrayal of Shivakumar as a Hindu deity sparked immediate outrage on the day he was set to take the oath of office. Many expressed their disapproval, labeling the depiction as an irresponsible attempt to merge religion with political glorification. One individual reacted on social media, stating that it was blasphemous and questioned how Kannada speakers could accept it as normal. Girish Bhardwaj, a lawyer from Karnataka, remarked that this undermines the sanctity of their deities.
Criticism from Various Quarters
Bhardwaj further emphasized that no politician should be depicted alongside or as a deity, arguing that such actions are against religious sentiments and diminish the sanctity of their gods. He expressed disappointment in Vishwavani for publishing such content, asserting that religion should not be trivialized for political gain. Numerous social media users also questioned the appropriateness of portraying Shivakumar as a Hindu deity, with some referencing his past legal troubles. Professor Giridhar Upadhyay from Bengaluru criticized the act, stating that comparing a former Tihar inmate to a Hindu god is a disgraceful act.
