Controversy Erupts Over Investigation of Air India Flight AI 171 Crash
Investigation into Air India Flight AI 171 Faces Backlash
The inquiry into the crash of Air India Flight AI 171 has become embroiled in controversy. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has summoned Captain Varun Anand, the nephew of the late Captain Sumit Sabharwal, prompting strong objections from the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP).
FIP Protests Summoning of Captain Varun Anand
The FIP has expressed its discontent regarding the AAIB's decision to call Captain Varun Anand in connection with the investigation of the Air India Flight 171 crash. They have issued a legal notice to the AAIB, labeling the action as "entirely inappropriate" and an act of harassment.
Captain Anand, who is an active pilot with Air India and a member of the FIP, was informed by his employer to appear on January 15. The FIP emphasized that the notice failed to clarify the legal basis, purpose, or relevance of the summons, as well as the capacity in which Captain Anand was expected to appear.
FIP Accuses AAIB of Harassment
The FIP, the largest organization representing pilots, has condemned the AAIB's actions as "wholly unwarranted." In their formal legal notice, they argue that summoning Captain Varun Anand constitutes mental harassment, asserting that he has no direct technical connection to the incident and should not be targeted solely due to familial ties.
Despite the controversy, Captain Anand has agreed to appear via video conference to address any questions.
