Incident at Newark Airport Raises Concerns
New Delhi: The Indian government has brought to the attention of the United States an incident involving an Indian national who was reportedly handcuffed and treated as a criminal at Newark Airport, according to official sources on Wednesday.
The Indian Consulate in New York confirmed that the individual, originally from Haryana, had entered the US without a valid visa and is currently facing deportation back to India following a court ruling.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has formally addressed this issue with the US embassy in New Delhi, as stated by the sources.
Footage showing the young Indian man being restrained by US officials at Newark Airport has circulated widely on social media.
Both the Indian embassy in Washington DC and the Consulate in New York are actively communicating with US authorities to gather more information regarding the situation.
The Consulate has verified that the individual from Haryana illegally entered the United States and is being deported as per legal directives.
During his layover in Newark, his behavior was deemed unsuitable for travel, leading to his restraint and subsequent admission to a medical facility.
Once he is deemed fit for travel, he will be sent back to India, as per the sources.
The Consulate in New York remains in contact with US officials regarding this case.
Sources indicated that they have yet to receive comprehensive details about the incident, including the circumstances of his restraint, the flight he was supposed to take, or his intended destination.
The incident, which involved the Indian man being 'handcuffed and allegedly treated like a criminal,' was captured on video by Indian-American Kunal Jain, who expressed feelings of 'helplessness and heartbreak.'
