He expressed significant concern regarding the decision to swap the traditional blue kit for a saffron one, citing a lack of transparency in the process.

As the Hockey World Cup approaches on August 15, the decision to replace the iconic blue jersey has drawn criticism from former players like Viren Rasquinha, Dhanraj Pillay, and Pargat Singh. They argue that the blue kit has long been a symbol of India's rich hockey heritage.

Dilip Tirkey's Email Goes Viral

The email sent by Tirkey to the executive committee has gained traction on social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter). In his message, he highlighted the unilateral nature of the decision-making process within Hockey India, stating that the jersey color change was made without prior discussion with the executive board.

Tirkey wrote, "I wish to bring to your attention the recent change in the colour of the Indian national team's jersey. This decision appears to have been taken and implemented without being placed before the executive board for discussion and without my prior knowledge."

Political Implications of the Change

The shift from blue to saffron has sparked political discussions, with opposition leaders accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of imposing a specific ideological identity on national sports. Hockey India and the players have denied these allegations.

Tirkey Seeks Clarification from Officials

In his email, Tirkey mentioned that the Odisha Government requested clarification on the matter, prompting him to ask for a formal written explanation from Hockey India officials. He stated, "I therefore request the concerned Hockey India officials to provide me with a written clarification at the earliest, outlining the basis for the decision, the process followed, and the circumstances under which the change was approved and implemented."

Previously, Tirkey defended the jersey change, claiming it was a sporting decision aimed at improving visibility on the field. However, the revelation of his lack of prior consultation has heightened internal tensions, contrasting with his public stance and raising questions about governance within Hockey India.
