Criticism of Jersey Color Shift
On Thursday, Pargat Singh, a Congress MLA and former captain of the Indian hockey team, voiced his disapproval regarding the recent alteration of the national hockey team's jersey color from blue to saffron. He accused the ruling party of imposing a specific color ideology on everything, stating that the emphasis should be on enhancing sports and improving athlete facilities. This change has ignited debate, with former Indian captain and Olympian Viren Rasquinha also questioning the decision, alongside Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Government's Intentions Under Scrutiny
Pargat Singh articulated that the government's intentions are evident, criticizing their focus on altering existing frameworks, including education policies. He noted that blue has historically been the primary color for hockey, and the shift to saffron reflects a broader agenda. "What does this achieve for our nation? The BJP's approach is unmistakably clear," he remarked.
Call for Focus on Sports Development
The Congress MLA urged the government to abandon what he termed a "petty mindset" and instead prioritize the promotion of athletes and the expansion of sports infrastructure. He emphasized the need to concentrate on significant issues like enhancing player support and overall sports development.

Pargat Singh stressed that sports should transcend political and social divisions, highlighting its role in fostering unity. He appealed to the BJP to keep sports free from political influences, asserting that sports convey a universal message of brotherhood.
Hockey India's Justification for the Change
In response to the controversy, Hockey India President Dilip Kumar Tirkey explained that the decision to switch the primary jersey color to orange was based on feedback from players, coaches, and support staff, citing visibility issues on blue turf. This change comes ahead of the FIH Men's and Women's Hockey World Cups set to commence on August 14 and 15 in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Future Considerations for Jersey Color
Regarding potential future changes to the jersey color, Tirkey mentioned that Hockey India would take player preferences into account. If the team feels uncomfortable with the orange color after the World Cup, adjustments could be made. For this tournament, the orange kit will serve as the primary jersey, with white as the secondary option.
