Controversy Erupts Over 2026 West Bengal Assembly Election Results

The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election results have ignited a significant controversy, with Mamata Banerjee alleging manipulation and interference by the BJP. Following Suvendu Adhikari's unexpected victory in Bhawanipur, Banerjee's claims of intimidation and irregularities during the vote counting process have raised serious questions. She plans to legally challenge the results, asserting that the election was marred by unethical practices. This outcome not only challenges the long-held perception of Banerjee's stronghold but also highlights the BJP's increasing influence in the state. Election Results Spark Legal Dispute

The results of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections have not only led to a shift in power but have also ignited a controversy that is now heading to the courts. The Bhawanipur constituency, once considered a stronghold for Mamata Banerjee, witnessed a surprising victory for Suvendu Adhikari, which has resulted in a phone call from Banerjee going viral on social media. In this conversation, shared by Kalyan Banerjee, a senior lawyer and MP from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Banerjee made serious allegations against the Election Commission and security forces.

Allegations of Election Manipulation

During the call, Banerjee claimed that she was leading against BJP's Suvendu Adhikari until the 16th round of vote counting, with only a few rounds remaining. She accused 'goons' of interfering in the election process by intimidating officials and agents at the counting centers. Furthermore, she alleged that the Election Commission, CRPF, and local election officials were acting on directives from Delhi and favoring the BJP.

A significant portion of her complaint focused on the alleged removal of TMC counting agents, who were reportedly replaced by agents from opposing parties. Banerjee stated, "The remaining rounds were entirely in our area. At that moment, some goons entered the counting center; they beat me along with Election Commission officials and, with the help of the CRPF, threw my agents out."

Concerns Over Counting Process

She further alleged that no representatives from her party were present during the final round of counting and claimed that EVM machines were taken to the strongroom without proper sealing. "I am standing outside the hall. I am not being allowed to enter," she remarked.

Describing the situation as 'atrocious,' she accused officials of first removing voters through SIR and then stealing votes amidst power outages and chaos at the counting centers. She also alleged that unsealed EVM machines were moved illegally, leading to a lack of transparency during the final counting rounds.

Legal Action Planned

Banerjee characterized the election results not as a victory for the BJP but as an 'immoral, dirty game' and a moral defeat for the opposition. She asserted that "everything has been documented and will be legally challenged."

She mentioned that evidence has been gathered and that Kalyan Banerjee is being informed of these facts as a lawyer. Suvendu Adhikari's victory over Banerjee in Bhawanipur has dealt a significant blow to the TMC. This outcome is symbolically and politically significant, shattering the long-held perception of Banerjee's stronghold and delivering a psychological blow to the TMC amid the BJP's rising influence across West Bengal.

A Dramatic Election Outcome

After all 20 rounds of counting were completed, Adhikari won by a margin of 15,105 votes. However, the nature of this contest was determined not just by the margin of victory but also by how the counting progressed. Initially, Banerjee had a substantial lead, but gradually, her advantage diminished, allowing Adhikari to pull ahead.

The significance of the Bhawanipur results lies in the fact that this seat was considered Banerjee's safest bastion. Adhikari's victory has altered this perception and reinforced the broader political message of the BJP's growing strength in the state.

The sequence of events in this contest closely mirrored the dramatic developments of the 2021 Nandigram elections. Just like in Nandigram, Banerjee initially led, but her advantage waned, and Adhikari made a strong comeback to secure victory. Overall, the results in Bhawanipur not only highlighted Adhikari's win by 15,105 votes but also evoked memories of a previous high-profile contest, further emphasizing the BJP's rising power in West Bengal.
