As the Asian Games 2026 progresses, the Indian rowing team has already secured seven medals, including one gold, four silver, and two bronze. However, a wave of controversy has emerged at the Nagaraagawa regatta course.

India's rowing squad, consisting of 22 members, is participating in this prestigious continental multi-sport event held in Aichi–Nagoya. The team features prominent athletes such as Arvind Singh, a silver medalist from the 2022 Asian Games, alongside Balraj Panwar, Jaswinder Singh, and Nitin Kumar.

In the lead-up to the opening races set to commence on September 23, the Indian rowing camp experienced significant disruption due to unexpected crew changes and event entry modifications imposed by the management.

Rowers Express Distress Over Last-Minute Changes

Reports indicate that the core lineup has undergone abrupt alterations, with Arvind Singh being shifted from single sculls to quadruple sculls, while Balraj Panwar has been moved in the opposite direction. This has led to disappointment among athletes regarding the management's late-night decisions.

An anonymous rower shared that some team members are struggling to cope with these sudden changes, resulting in severe mental distress that has affected their ability to eat before this crucial event. "Some rowers have not taken food yet as they are in a disturbed state of mind. They are not knowing what to do," the rower stated.

Management's Decisions Under Scrutiny

The team management, led by Australian head coach Antony Patterson and Rowing Federation of India (RFI) president Balaji Maradap, has made several changes to the initial pairings. Nitin Kumar and Jaswinder Singh have replaced Saurav Kumar and Vipul Satish in the men's pair.

Additionally, reserve rower Jasmail Singh has been introduced into the coxless four, while Vipul Ghurde has been reassigned from the men's pair to the coxless four, resulting in Saurav Kumar's exclusion from the event.

Athletes Voice Concerns Over Preparation Disruption

Another rower expressed frustration regarding the last-minute changes, emphasizing how they disrupted months of preparation. "We are going by what our manager has told us. We will be giving our best when we enter the water, but they shouldn't have done this," the athlete remarked.

"It has brought a lot of pressure and anxiety. I couldn't sleep last night; I was very disturbed. A crew combination is set for six months or one year. We have been practicing for a long time, and when it is changed one day before such a big competition, the athlete gets disturbed mentally," they added.

Coach Defends Changes Amidst Rising Tensions

Antony Patterson, India's rowing head coach, defended the management's decisions, stating that the aim was to enhance India's chances of winning medals despite the compressed competition schedule. However, the last-minute adjustments have reportedly placed immense psychological pressure on the rowers, who remain determined to compete for national pride.
