Controversy Erupts as Former Pakistani Cricketers Attend Event in Dubai Amid Tensions

Event Sparks Outrage

Dubai: Recently, former Pakistani cricketers Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul found themselves at the center of a controversy after attending an event organized by a Kerala community in Dubai. This comes just weeks after Afridi made negative remarks regarding the Pahalgam terror attack. A video that has gone viral captures the moment when the two cricketers were greeted with enthusiastic cheers from the audience, with some attendees chanting 'Boom Boom,' a nod to Afridi's nickname. The 47-year-old responded playfully, saying, 'Hogaya Boom Boom.'

Mixed Reactions from the Community

As India engages in #OperationSindoor, the Kerala community in the UAE was seen celebrating the presence of Afridi and Gul. This has led to criticism, with some questioning the community's priorities during a time of conflict. A tweet highlighted the situation, stating, 'Kerala once again shows its true colors celebrating Pakistani stars while our soldiers fight on the frontlines.'

Clarification from Organizers

The Cochin University B.Tech Alumni Association (CUBAA) organized the event at the Pakistan Association Dubai (PAD) on May 25. In a statement released on May 30, CUBAA clarified that the cricketers were not invited and appeared unexpectedly. They explained, 'We had officially booked and announced PAD Dubai as the venue for Ormachuvadukal Season 2 on April 5, 2025, prior to the recent geopolitical tensions.'

Unexpected Visit

CUBAA further noted that Afridi and Gul were at PAD Dubai for the Guinness World Record attempt for the Largest UAE Flag with Handprints. They stated, 'These cricketers made an unannounced appearance at our event, which was held in the same auditorium. We want to clarify that no one from our organizing team invited them.'

Apology and Commitment

The statement emphasized that the team could not manage the crowd's reaction effectively due to the unexpected visit. They expressed regret for any confusion or distress caused, stating, 'We sincerely apologize to those affected. It was never our intention to offend, and we remain committed to the cultural and inclusive spirit of our community.'

Public Sentiment

A veteran expressed his disappointment on social media, stating, 'Shahid Afridi criticizes India and the Indian armed forces while the Indian community from Kerala in Dubai welcomes him. My head bows in shame and my blood boils.'
