Controversy Erupts as Actor Vijay Faces Legal Action Over Devotional Song Alteration

Legal Complaint Filed Against Vijay and Velmurugan

Chennai: A police report has been lodged against actor and politician Vijay, along with folk singer Velmurugan, for allegedly mocking a devotional song dedicated to Lord Murugan during the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) anniversary celebration on February 2.

The complaint was filed by Advocate Kutrala Nathan with the Nellai Municipal Police, calling for legal action against Velmurugan for purportedly altering the lyrics of the well-known Murugan devotional song, Maruthamalai Mamaniye, during his performance at the TVK event held at the party's office in Panaiyur, Chennai.

The complaint also implicates Vijay, TVK general secretary N. Anand, and party member Aadhav Arjuna, claiming they were either responsible for or complicit in the controversial performance.

According to the complainant, Velmurugan replaced the traditional lyric 'Varuvai Kuganey' with politically charged phrases that praised Vijay and the TVK.

The advocate asserted that this alteration deeply offended the religious sentiments of Murugan devotees, trivializing a sacred hymn.

Furthermore, the complaint alleges that the performance was politically motivated, merging religious themes with partisan propaganda.

It warns that such actions could incite communal discord, offend believers, and lead to law and order issues.

The petition also criticizes the organizers for permitting a devotional song to be used in a way that allegedly mocked faith and stirred religious emotions.

"As devotees of Murugan, we are profoundly hurt by the distortion of a revered hymn for political purposes," the advocate expressed in the complaint.

Vijay officially launched the TVK on February 2, 2024, and has since been actively involved in Tamil Nadu politics, initiating his first Assembly election campaign from Tiruchirappalli.

After a previous controversy at a TVK public meeting in Karur, Vijay had temporarily halted his campaign before resuming his political activities.

The anniversary event included a musical performance by Velmurugan, during which Vijay was seen joyfully dancing, with visuals widely shared on social media.

This performance has now sparked backlash and legal action from certain Murugan devotees.

As of now, police officials have not confirmed if a case has been officially registered, and there has been no public response from Vijay, Velmurugan, or the TVK leadership regarding the complaint.
