Political Controversy in Chhattisgarh
A political uproar has erupted in Chhattisgarh following an order from the BJP-led state government. Starting from June 16, 2026, all government schools will be required to incorporate daily recitations of Vedic mantras, including the Gayatri Mantra and Saraswati Vandana. This decision has sparked intense political debate; the opposition Congress party accuses the government of attempting to saffronize public education, while the ruling BJP defends the move as a means to promote cultural values and moral development among students.
New Daily Routine for Schools
According to a directive from the school education department, schools across the state will adhere to a structured daily routine aimed at fostering intellectual growth and cultural awareness. This schedule includes the national anthem, patriotic songs, a prayer mantra, Saraswati Vandana, a guru mantra, and excerpts from the lives of notable historical figures during the morning assembly. Students will also be required to recite a food mantra before lunch, and the school day will conclude with the state song, Gayatri Mantra, and a peace mantra.
Opposition's Strong Reactions
Congress leaders have vehemently opposed this order, claiming it violates the secular nature of government schools. Sushil Anand Shukla, chairman of the Congress media cell, stated that the BJP government is attempting to run secular schools like Saraswati Shishu Mandirs. He emphasized that children from all religions and communities attend these schools, and imposing religious teachings contradicts the Constitution.
Concerns Over Future Demands
Shukla further warned that this initiative could lead to similar demands from other communities. However, the ruling BJP dismissed these criticisms, asserting that the initiative is non-political and focused on character building. State School Education Minister Gajendra Yadav stated that the aim of introducing these prayers is to instill discipline and good values in students.
