Removal of the Controversial Statue
For several years, a controversial statue featuring two severed legs and a football had become a notable landmark at Kolkata's renowned Salt Lake Stadium. Designed by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, this statue sparked division among the public, with many labeling it as ugly and even grotesque. Ultimately, on Saturday, the statue was dismantled just days after BJP Minister Nishith Pramanik pledged its removal. Local residents were taken aback on Saturday morning to find that the statue, located near the VVIP gate of the stadium where football legend Lionel Messi recently played, had been taken down. This statue, considered a representation of Mamata Banerjee's vision, was erected in 2017 ahead of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup and featured the 'Biswa Bangla' logo, a significant symbol of the previous TMC government.

Since its unveiling, the statue has been mired in controversy, with numerous football fans questioning its bizarre design. Nevertheless, it became synonymous with the stadium, which has hosted many memorable derby matches between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, as well as games featuring international footballers. BJP leader Kiya Ghosh remarked on social media, asking if anyone remembered this grotesque structure in front of Salt Lake Stadium, confirming that it has been removed as promised.
