Lucknow, August 4 - Uttar Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya stated on Tuesday that individuals who receive education from madrasas develop a mindset akin to that of a terrorist. Speaking to reporters at the Vidhan Bhawan, he remarked, “Those who are educated in madrasas do not chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' nor do they sing the 'Vande Mataram' song. Such education fosters a terrorist-like mentality within them.”
Political Reactions to the Statement
In response to Maurya's comments, senior leader Shivpal Yadav from the Samajwadi Party accused the BJP of harboring terrorists, claiming they can be found in their offices. He asserted, “The BJP trains these terrorists, and they are present in their offices and homes.”
Condemnation from Muslim Organizations
Meanwhile, the prominent Muslim organization Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (AM) condemned Maurya's statement as an extreme form of communalism. The organization's president, Maulana Arshad Madani, criticized the Deputy CM's remarks, stating that those whose ancestors sought forgiveness from the British are now accusing madrasas of terrorism. He emphasized that such inflammatory and irresponsible statements not only undermine the dignity of a constitutional position but also insult the rich religious and educational traditions of the country, the history of the freedom struggle, and the Indian Constitution.
Historical Context and Responsibility
Madani pointed out that only someone ignorant of the country's history and the role of madrasas in the freedom struggle could make such statements. He highlighted that the very madrasas now labeled as centers of terrorism were the ones whose scholars first raised the call for the country's independence, faced the gallows with courage, and stood against the atrocities of British rule without ever bowing to foreign governance.
Call for Unity and Respect
Maulana Madani asserted that the position of Deputy Chief Minister is not owned by any single party, religion, or community, but is a constitutional role for all citizens of the state. He urged that every responsible individual who has taken an oath to uphold the Constitution must work to strengthen unity, trust, and mutual respect in society, rather than making statements that hurt the sentiments of millions and damage social harmony.
