A video capturing the moment a young Black boy was handcuffed by Metropolitan Police in the Isle of Dogs, east London, has gained significant attention online, igniting public outcry regarding the officers' conduct. This incident took place on Saturday, July 25, close to Alexia Square. The footage circulating on social media depicts the child on the ground in handcuffs, questioning the officers, "What have I done? Why am I being arrested?" The boy maintains that he and his friends were merely "play fighting."

A bystander can be heard advising the officers to "be gentle, he's a child," while another notes that the boy had "tears running down his face" and seemed scared. Reports indicate that only the Black child was pursued and accused of possessing a weapon, while his friends were not pursued.

In their statement, the Metropolitan Police explained that officers were on patrol near Alexia Square around 8:30 p.m. when they observed what seemed to be a group engaged in a fight. They noted that it was difficult to ascertain the ages of the individuals involved from a distance. The police reported that the group fled upon noticing the officers, discarding items, including a balaclava. Officers chased two members of the group on foot, detaining one boy near Pepper Street for a Section 1 stop and search.

The police clarified that the decision to stop the boy was not influenced by race, mentioning that another boy was also pursued but managed to escape from a second officer. They asserted that the stop and search was conducted in a respectful manner, with officers explaining the reasons for the boy's detention. After conversing with the boy and his companions, the police stated that no offenses were found. All individuals involved received advice regarding their behavior, including the implications of running from police and wearing balaclavas, which, while not illegal, can cause public concern and draw police attention. Despite this explanation, the viral footage has led to claims that the Metropolitan Police "adultified" the child during the incident.
