Continued Rainfall in Kerala Causes Flooding and Displacement

Ongoing Flooding in Kerala

Heavy rainfall persisted across various regions of Kerala on Saturday. Although the water levels in several areas are gradually receding, many roads and homes remain submerged, forcing hundreds to seek refuge in relief camps. Officials reported that the upper Kuttanad and interior regions of Kottayam are among the hardest-hit by the flooding.

In some locations, the water levels have started to decline, but the slow pace of this reduction has left many homes and roads still inundated, trapping local residents. Key routes, including the Alappuzha-Changanassery road, are still underwater, disrupting transportation in the area.

Rescue Efforts and Weather Alerts

Small boats are being utilized to transport people and essential supplies to and from flooded areas. The situation remains critical, with many individuals in southern and central districts continuing to reside in relief camps. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'Orange Alert' for Sunday, warning of heavy rainfall in the districts of Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

An 'Orange Alert' indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall ranging from 11 to 20 centimeters. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has highlighted that strong winds pose one of the most dangerous weather conditions in the state, often leading to fallen trees and broken branches.

KSDMA has advised residents to avoid taking shelter under trees or parking vehicles in such areas during strong winds and rain. Local authorities, revenue officials, and elected representatives have been instructed to arrange for the transportation of affected individuals to relief camps as needed.
