Congress Urges Special Parliament Session on Defence Strategy After CDS Remarks
Call for Immediate Parliamentary Session
Guwahati, June 1: The Congress party has called for an urgent special session of Parliament to discuss India's defence readiness and foreign policy strategies, following significant comments made by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan regarding Operation Sindoor.
During a press conference, Jairam Ramesh, the Congress general secretary responsible for communications, expressed concern over the government's lack of engagement with opposition parties, particularly after the CDS's critical statements at an international forum.
Ramesh stated, “General Anil Chauhan has made crucial remarks about Operation Sindoor in Singapore. It would have been fitting for the Prime Minister or the Defence Minister to convene an all-party meeting to inform opposition leaders about this matter.”
In an interview with an American news outlet in Singapore, General Chauhan revealed that India had modified its military strategies and executed precision strikes deep within Pakistani territory following the loss of Indian aircraft in recent military confrontations.
While he did not disclose specific casualty numbers, the CDS acknowledged that the Indian military faced losses during the four-day conflict but responded decisively, leading Pakistan to seek a cessation of hostilities. This marks the first official recognition from the military regarding setbacks during these skirmishes.
General Chauhan also firmly rejected Islamabad's assertions of having downed six Indian jets, labeling them as “absolutely incorrect.”
In light of these developments, Ramesh reiterated the Congress party's ongoing demand for transparency in national security matters.
He stated, “We have consistently advocated for all-party meetings and a special session of Parliament to evaluate the nation’s defence preparedness and strategic direction.”
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also commented on Saturday, accusing the BJP-led government of misleading the public regarding the extent and results of the India-Pakistan conflict.
He reaffirmed the party's call for a thorough review of India's defence readiness by an independent expert committee.
Kharge emphasized, “National security should not be cloaked in secrecy. The nation deserves a truthful and transparent account of our military operations and preparedness.”
