Congress Prepares for Upcoming Elections

Chirang, Dec 22:  As the Assembly elections draw near, the Congress party has declared its intention to publish a people's manifesto, which will be crafted based on discussions held in all 35 districts of Assam.

During a press conference in Chirang, located in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Assam's Leader of Opposition (LoP) Debabrata Saikia emphasized that the manifesto represents a genuine commitment rather than a mere electoral tactic.

“Election manifestos are frequently dismissed by leaders like Amit Shah as mere ‘jumlas’ designed to attract voters. However, the Congress treats its manifesto with utmost seriousness,” Saikia stated.

He mentioned that the party has implemented QR codes and suggestion boxes throughout the districts to enable citizens to voice their concerns and aspirations.

“We have also launched a website called ‘Notun Asom’, allowing individuals to directly submit their demands, grievances, and suggestions. Anyone wishing to have their issues included in our election manifesto can do so through these platforms,” Saikia added.

Saikia was joined by former Barpeta MP Abdul Khaleque and members of the Pradesh Congress manifesto committee.

Reflecting on the roots of organized governance, the LoP noted that the concept of five-year plans was initiated during Jawaharlal Nehru's era to ensure systematic government operations and fulfillment of manifesto promises.

The Congress has initiated its public engagement campaign under the slogan “Raijor Padulit Raijor Congress”, which involves discussions with representatives from various organizations.

“This program was first launched in Dibrugarh on December 6, and today we are in Chirang interacting with different organizations,” Saikia remarked.

He pointed out issues concerning land pattas, exclusion from welfare schemes, and challenges affecting both Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and non-BTC regions.

“We are hopeful that if we come to power, we will earnestly work to resolve these issues,” he stated.

Regarding potential alliances, Saikia mentioned that the Congress is in talks with regional parties ahead of the elections, although the Bodoland People’s Front and United People’s Party Liberal are currently allied with the BJP.

“Our future decisions will hinge on their positions. We remain open to all political parties,” he added.

Saikia concluded by asserting that the Congress will persist in addressing public concerns while in opposition. “We will approach the elections by uniting everyone, steering clear of communal politics, and striving for harmony,” he said.
