Congress Announces New Candidates

Guwahati, March 21: The Indian National Congress has published its fourth list of candidates for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, designating nominees for an additional seven constituencies while officially assigning 11 seats to its ally, Raijor Dal, following extensive discussions.

According to the list approved by the party's Central Election Committee, Bidisha Neog will contest from Jalukbari (37), a seat that has been a stronghold for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma since 2001.

Neog expressed her gratitude on social media, stating, “I am honored by the party's confidence in me for 37-Jalukbari, and I am committed to leading and transforming this constituency.”

This latest announcement brings the total number of candidates to 92. Other nominees include Rohit Pariga from Tangla (48), Jayanta Borah from Biswanath (70), Dr. Joy Prakash Das from Naoboicha (75-SC), Gyandip Mohan from Mahmora (94), Pran Kurmi from Titabor (102), and Rahul Roy from Hailakandi (121).

The allocation of the Dhing constituency to Raijor Dal is particularly noteworthy, as it had previously been a contentious issue during alliance negotiations, with both parties hesitant to relinquish the seat.

This announcement signifies a breakthrough in the seat-sharing discussions between Congress and Raijor Dal, which had been stalled for several weeks.

In addition to the 11 seats designated for the regional party led by Akhil Gogoi, Goalpara East and Gauripur have been identified as “friendly contest” constituencies, where both parties will field candidates.

Discontent regarding seat-sharing was evident in Dalgaon, where Congress members protested against conceding the constituency to Raijor Dal.

Meanwhile, Congress has been systematically announcing its candidates in phases for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The party's first list was released on March 3, featuring 42 candidates, followed by a second list on March 14 with 23 additional nominees.

On March 19, the party revealed its third list, which included 22 candidates, prior to the release of the fourth list.
