Congress Announces Candidates for Kerala Assembly Elections
The Congress party has released its initial list of 55 candidates for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. Among the notable candidates, V.D. Satheesan will contest from Paravur, while Ramesh Chennithala has been nominated from Haripad. Chandy Oommen, the son of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, will represent Puthuppally. What Happened in 2021?
In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), made history by retaining power in the 140-member assembly. This achievement is notable in a state known for frequently changing governments. The CPI(M) emerged as the largest party, securing 62 seats with a vote share of 25.38%, while the United Democratic Front (UDF), led by the Indian National Congress (INC), won 21 seats with 25.12% of the votes. The Communist Party of India (CPI) gained 17 seats, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) won 15 seats. Other allied parties included Kerala Congress (Mani) with five seats, while Kerala Congress, Janata Dal (Secular), and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) each secured two seats.
