Congress Announces Candidates for West Bengal Elections
New Delhi: On Sunday, the Congress party revealed its initial roster of 284 candidates for the forthcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. Among the notable candidates are former state unit president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who will contest from Baharampur, and ex-TMC MP Mausam Noor, representing Malatipur.
The Congress is entering the electoral fray independently for all 294 assembly seats in West Bengal, announcing the names of its candidates in a single release.
In addition to Chowdhury and Noor, the party has nominated Madhap Rai from Darjeeling, Abdul Hannan from Sujapur, Susmita Biswas from Dum Dum, Gautam Bhattacharya from Diamond Harbour, Souvik Mukherjee from Asansol Dakshin, and Prasenjit Puitandi from Asansol Uttar.
This candidate announcement followed a comprehensive meeting of the Central Election Committee (CEC), where senior Congress leaders discussed the list for the upcoming elections.
Key figures in attendance included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Rahul Gandhi, and AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, along with West Bengal leaders.
Noteworthy attendees also comprised former West Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and CEC members such as Ambika Soni, Madhusudan Mistry, Salman Khurshid, T S Singhdeo, K J George, P L Punia, and Amee Yajnik, alongside AICC's West Bengal in-charge, Ghulam Ahmed Mir.
Mir informed the press that the party had received around 2,500 applications for the 294 assembly seats.
We are committed to contesting all 294 assembly seats in West Bengal, ensuring none are left unfilled. This decision reflects the desires of our grassroots workers from the outset, Mir stated.
The West Bengal assembly elections are scheduled to take place in two phases on April 23 and 29, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
