Congress Backs Pawar for Rajya Sabha Elections
On Wednesday, Congress legislator Vijay Wadettiwar announced that the party will endorse Sharad Pawar in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections. This decision follows a call from the party's high command and Mallikarjun Kharge. He noted that although Congress initially claimed the seat, they opted to support Pawar in alignment with the principles of the Maha Vikas Aghadi and to foster unity among coalition partners ahead of crucial elections.
Speaking to reporters, Wadettiwar explained that the party had a strong claim to the Rajya Sabha seat as a national party. However, several leaders from the NCP faction led by Sharad Pawar reached out to them, including discussions with Uddhav Thackeray. He emphasized that they are adhering to the principles of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The high command has decided to support Pawar, following a call from Kharge confirming this decision.
According to sources, a meeting was held at the residence of Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi to discuss candidate selection for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The press release further detailed that the terms of 37 elected members from Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana will conclude in April, creating vacancies for new members. The notification to initiate the election process will be issued on February 26, with the last date for filing nominations set for March 5. The scrutiny of nomination papers will occur on March 6, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 9.
