Congress Prepares for BTC Elections

Guwahati, July 9: The Congress party is intensifying its grassroots initiatives in anticipation of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections set for September.

In this regard, Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), led an important review meeting at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Wednesday.

After the discussions, Gogoi revealed that a group of approximately 75 to 80 observers would be deployed to collect insights from the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

He stated, "Our electoral strategy will not solely originate from Rajiv Bhawan in Dispur; it will be shaped by collaborating closely with grassroots workers within their communities."

Highlighting the need to connect with even the most remote areas, Gogoi noted that voters in the BTR are increasingly seeking alternatives.

“The Congress can only thrive when we are genuinely engaged with local communities. In BTR and across Assam, every Congress member must be proactive. No one should remain inactive. Each worker must concentrate on fortifying the party’s organizational structure,” he emphasized.

Gogoi also mentioned that the party has completed its candidate selection for the council elections, asserting, "We are fully prepared."

Addressing one of the party's key priorities for the autonomous council elections, the Jorhat MP criticized the state government's alleged disregard for road infrastructure in the BTR.

"The condition of the roads is deplorable. While the Chief Minister boasts about constructing flyovers in Guwahati, rural Assam continues to be overlooked. What we truly require are roads in villages, not just flyovers in urban areas. Numerous wooden bridges have been washed away and need immediate attention," he stated.

Gogoi accused the government of favoritism, claiming, “Only four major contractors have profited from all the flyover construction projects. Discontent in the BTR is growing because the government is prioritizing urban infrastructure over rural necessities.”

This grassroots-oriented strategy was initially presented by Gogoi during his three-day outreach tour of the BTR last month.

During a press interaction in Kokrajhar’s Tulshibari on June 22, Gogoi expressed that the Congress aims to "understand the aspirations and dreams of the people."
