Congress Strategizes for Assam Assembly Elections 2026
Congress Meeting in New Delhi
Guwahati, Dec 2: The Congress leadership convened in New Delhi to assess the party's preparations for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections scheduled for 2026.
Key figures from the All India Congress Committee (AICC), including President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, engaged with the Assam Congress team led by APCC chief Gaurav Gogoi.
During the strategy session at the AICC headquarters, discussions centered on enhancing the party's organizational outreach and formulating a political strategy ahead of the elections.
"We engaged in extensive discussions regarding the issues faced by the public and our responses during the recent Winter Session of the Assam Assembly. Kharge and Gandhi evaluated our performance in fulfilling our responsibilities in the state," Gogoi shared with reporters post-meeting.
Gogoi mentioned that the leadership expressed satisfaction with the team's efforts and pledged full support for advancing the party's goal of a 'BJP-free' Assam.
"The high command has committed to assisting in realizing the people's aspiration for a BJP-mukt Assam and will increase involvement in this mission in the near future," he stated.
He also noted that Gandhi inquired specifically about the investigation into the mysterious death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg.
"It is encouraging to see Rahul Gandhi showing interest in the progress made and whether the people of Assam have been informed of the findings," Gogoi remarked.
However, he refrained from elaborating on the Asom Sonmilito Morcha, indicating that many topics were discussed but he was not at liberty to disclose everything.
This meeting follows the conclusion of the Assam Assembly's Winter Session and coincides with the ongoing 'Special Revision' of electoral rolls in the state.
The issue has sparked significant debate in the current Winter Session of Parliament, with the Opposition, led by Congress, calling for discussions on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.
Last week, during a meeting in his constituency of Jorhat, Gogoi raised concerns about serious flaws in the electoral roll revision process and extensive land transfers impacting indigenous and tribal populations.
Speaking to the press at the Jorhat District Congress Bhawan, he stated, "Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has brought in BJP workers from outside Assam and added their names to the voters' list. This indicates that the Assam Assembly election is now influenced by outsiders rather than the people of Assam."
Previously, the Election Commission had issued specific guidelines regarding the SIR for Assam, labeling it a 'Special Revision.'
Officials indicated that this initiative was designed to address Assam's distinct legal and procedural challenges related to the citizenship framework and the Supreme Court-monitored National Register of Citizens (NRC) process.
