Guwahati, Sep 14: After much anticipation regarding its candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, the Congress party has officially announced former Batadrava MLA Sibamoni Bora as its nominee, leading to a competitive four-way race against the BJP, AIUDF, and TMC.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has given his approval for Bora's candidacy for the bypoll in the 9-Nagaon Parliamentary Constituency, as stated in a party announcement on Monday.
The statement read, “The Congress President, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, has approved the candidature of Smt. Sibamoni Bora, Ex-MLA, as the party candidate to contest the upcoming byelection to the Lok Sabha from 9 - Nagaon Parliamentary Constituency of Assam.”
With the nomination deadline set for September 16, this announcement follows a lengthy meeting held by Congress Assam in-charge and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel with the party's Assam unit at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati.
Baghel emphasized that winning the Nagaon bypoll is crucial for the Congress, describing it as a “matter of prestige.”
Bora's nomination has intensified the competition, establishing a four-way contest that includes the Congress, BJP, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), and Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The AIUDF was the first to declare its candidate, selecting Rejaul Karim Sarkar on August 13. Despite earlier rumors of a potential replacement by party leader Badruddin Ajmal, Sarkar remains the candidate.
The TMC joined the race shortly after the Election Commission revealed the poll schedule, nominating Dhing College vice-principal Prof Abdul Salam.
The BJP has chosen former Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Devashish Sharma as its candidate.
With all four major parties now participating, the Nagaon bypoll is shaping up to be a closely monitored event as the September 16 nomination deadline approaches.
