Nagpur, Oct 29: The Congress party celebrated a significant win in the Nagpur Division Graduates' constituency during the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, deeming it a "victory for democracy and the Constitution".
This marks the second consecutive win for Congress in this constituency, overcoming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in an area traditionally seen as a bastion for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Congress candidate Abhijit Govindrao Wanjarri secured victory against BJP's Sudhakar Kohle with a margin of 3,271 votes after an extended counting period.
Overall, the Opposition coalition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) claimed three out of five MLC seats, while the BJP-led MahaYuti managed to win only two.
Maharashtra Congress President Harshwardhan Sapkal remarked that the "illusionary bubble of Modi-Fadnavis has burst," referring to the MVA's success in the MLC elections as a "resounding victory".
On social media platform X, Sapkal stated, "In the Nagpur Graduates constituency, Congress MVA candidate Abhijeet Wanjarri has dealt a significant blow to the BJP candidate. In the city that serves as the RSS headquarters, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have faced defeat from Congress for the second time in a row."
"Out of the five Legislative Council seats, the Maha Vikas Aghadi has won three, delivering a significant setback to the BJP Mahayuti. Despite their resources and power, the BJP has faced defeat," he added.
Maharashtra Congress in-charge Sirivella Prasad also praised the victory, asserting that the public's mandate cannot be undermined by "power or money".
On X, Prasad expressed, "Maha Vikas Aghadi wins 3 of 5 seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections! The victory of Congress candidate Abhijeet Wanjari in Nagpur, a BJP stronghold, sends a clear message: the people's mandate cannot be defeated by power or money."
"This is a victory for democracy, the Constitution, and the voice of the people! I extend my congratulations to the Maharashtra Congress leadership, all leaders from the Nagpur Graduates' Constituency, and our party workers and alliance partners for this achievement," he concluded.
Nagpur is notably the headquarters of the RSS, which holds a strong ideological and organizational influence in the area.
With this victory, Congress has marked its presence in the by-elections conducted for 28 Legislative Council seats across four states: Karnataka, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
