Congress Defends Himachal Pradesh's Financial Decisions

In response to the BJP's critique regarding the increasing debt in Himachal Pradesh, Congress spokesperson Puneet Malli has urged the opposition to first reflect on its own record during its time in office.

Malli emphasized that the newly established Chief Minister's office is “not a personal asset but a lasting institutional resource for the Himachal government.” This ₹20 crore facility will house the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, and include amenities for visitors. He pointed out that future Chief Ministers will also utilize this building.

Regarding financial matters, Malli stated that the Congress administration is tackling fiscal challenges with transparency, aiming for a fiscal deficit of approximately 3.5% of GSDP in the upcoming 2026-27 budget. The budget allocates ₹4,840 crore for debt repayment, with total liabilities expected to reach 40.5% of GSDP. He highlighted the government's commitment to enhancing revenue while managing expenditures judiciously, ensuring the needs of employees, pensioners, and development initiatives are met.

Malli accused the BJP of engaging in selective politics, questioning why the opposition focuses solely on the expenses of one building while ignoring the broader financial context of the state. He asserted that if the BJP seeks a serious discussion, the Congress is prepared to provide data regarding debt, central funding, and spending trends.
