Congress Reacts to Sudden Resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar
Congress Questions Vice President's Resignation
Guwahati, July 22: Gaurav Gogoi, the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, expressed his astonishment on Tuesday regarding the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, urging the government to clarify whether it had any prior knowledge of this development.
The MP from Jorhat also sought details about the government's plan for the transition of the vice presidential role.
"The resignation of the Hon'ble Vice President is both sudden and shocking. I wish good health to respected Dhankar ji," he shared on a social media platform.
"It is essential for the Union government to clarify if they had any prior notice and have arranged for a seamless transition. The absence of senior ministers at a meeting chaired by the Hon'ble Vice President yesterday now holds even greater significance," he added.
Dhankhar submitted his resignation on Monday evening, citing health issues, and notified President Droupadi Murmu that he would be stepping down immediately.
The Opposition raised concerns on Monday regarding the abrupt nature of Dhankhar's resignation, with Congress suggesting that there is likely more to this unexpected decision than is apparent.
"While Mr. Dhankhar must prioritize his health, it is evident that there is much more to his sudden resignation than meets the eye," remarked senior Congress leader Jiaram Ramesh.
The Congress party has also called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to persuade Dhankhar to reconsider his decision.
Recently, Dhankhar underwent angioplasty at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.
During his notable tenure as the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar faced multiple confrontations with the opposition, which even initiated a motion for his impeachment.
This motion marked the first attempt in independent India to remove a vice president, but it was ultimately dismissed by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh.
