Concerns Raised Over Manikarnika Ghat's Redevelopment

On Thursday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his concerns regarding the proposed transformation of the renowned Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi. He described the initiative as a tasteless attempt at beautification and commercialization that threatens to obliterate centuries-old religious, cultural, and spiritual heritage. Kharge accused the authorities of demolishing numerous temples and pilgrimage sites under the guise of development.

He questioned the intentions behind this project, asking if it was meant to betray the millions who visit Kashi in search of salvation at the end of their lives.

Allegations of Heritage Destruction

Kharge reportedly shared images and videos on social media showing the destruction of idols and the use of bulldozers at the site. He criticized the actions taken at Manikarnika Ghat, stating that the historical and spiritual legacy was being destroyed in the name of tasteless beautification and commercialization. He lamented that the aim seemed to be erasing every piece of historical heritage, replacing it with mere nameplates.

He emphasized that demolishing this unique heritage, established during the Gupta period and later reconstructed by Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar, is a crime. Kharge raised suspicions that the motive might be to benefit Prime Minister Modi's business associates, questioning why everything from water to forests has been handed over to them, and now cultural heritage is at risk.

Questions on Preservation and Restoration

Kharge posed two critical questions to the public: Could the restoration, cleanliness, and beautification have been achieved while preserving the heritage? Why were centuries-old idols destroyed and discarded in the rubble instead of being preserved in a museum?

The redevelopment plan for Manikarnika Ghat was initiated with the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 7, 2023. The estimated cost for the entire restoration project is around ₹17.56 crores. The new design will include seating arrangements for special guests, ramps, viewing areas, and other essential facilities. Additionally, a wooden plaza will be constructed at Manikarnika Ghat, allowing mourners to purchase wood for cremation.
