Congress President Clarifies Controversial Remarks on PM Modi
Clarification from Congress President
On Wednesday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed the controversy surrounding his recent comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that he had already clarified his remarks in Chennai. Speaking to reporters in Bidar, Karnataka, Kharge emphasized that he had provided an explanation regarding his statement made during a press conference on the last day of campaigning in Tamil Nadu, where he labeled the Prime Minister as a terrorist. Following widespread criticism, Kharge clarified that his intention was to highlight how the Prime Minister allegedly intimidates his opponents by misusing central agencies.
Reactions from BJP Leaders
BJP leaders condemned Kharge's remarks and lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission, demanding an apology. On Tuesday, in Kalaburagi, Kharge told a news agency that he never referred to the Prime Minister as a terrorist but was discussing the Modi government's alleged targeting of political adversaries. He stated that the Prime Minister is instilling fear among politicians and candidates, mentioning that there is a form of 'terrorism' occurring, with raids conducted by the ED, Income Tax Department, and CBI.
Kharge's Explanation
He further asserted that this form of intimidation is being encouraged by the Prime Minister. 'I never called him a terrorist... they are scaring people. They are trying to silence individuals through raids and defeat them in elections. This is what I conveyed in Chennai,' he explained. Earlier, during the final day of campaigning in Tamil Nadu, Kharge stirred controversy by criticizing the AIADMK for supporting the BJP and labeling PM Modi as a terrorist who does not believe in equality. This incident occurred amidst discussions on the opposition's unity following the defeat of the delimitation bill related to the women's reservation bill.
Further Clarifications
In light of the backlash, Kharge reiterated that he did not intend to label Modi as a terrorist but rather to describe him as someone who intimidates political opponents. He clarified, 'He (PM Modi) is instilling fear in people and political parties. I never said he is a terrorist... I want to make it clear that Modi always threatens. Institutions like the ED, Income Tax, and CBI are under his control. He also wants to take charge of delimitation.'
