Congress to Celebrate Three Years in Power

Munish Sood
MANDI:

As the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu administration marks three years in office, which included two years of significant monsoon-related challenges, the ruling Congress is gearing up to showcase its accomplishments at a significant public gathering in Mandi on December 11.

During this event, the Chief Minister is anticipated to present the government's development strategy for the remaining two years of its term.

The gathering, set to occur at Paddal Ground, will also welcome families affected by the disasters, allowing the government to directly address their concerns. Following the announcement of a relief package, CM Sukhu may introduce further initiatives aimed at assisting those most impacted by the calamities.

Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, who has faced considerable criticism from the opposition BJP during the recent Vidhan Sabha session in Dharamshala, has been actively overseeing preparations in Mandi for several days. Political rivals are labeling the event as a celebratory occasion, despite the ongoing recovery efforts from widespread devastation.

BJP Critiques Event Timing

The opposition BJP has voiced concerns regarding the timing of the event, accusing the government of hosting festivities amid a crisis. Similar criticisms arose during the winter Assembly session. To mitigate any potential political backlash, the government has advised ministers and officials to remain alert.

The administration is striving to present the event positively, instructing district authorities to ensure that nothing appears insensitive or inappropriate.

Despite the ongoing challenges, the government intends to highlight its progress across various sectors. Beneficiaries of different welfare programs will also be present to share their experiences and demonstrate the impact of recent initiatives. The event will serve as a platform to outline the goals for the next two years.

Minister Negi Reviews Event Preparations

Revenue Minister Negi, who is overseeing the arrangements at the venue, referred to the event as a “public outreach conference.” Both scheme beneficiaries and disaster survivors are expected to attend. He mentioned that accommodations, drinking water, meals, and seating arrangements are being meticulously monitored to ensure a seamless experience.

Given that the event is taking place in the home district of Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, the BJP is closely monitoring developments. Mandi district has produced the highest number of BJP legislators in the Assembly, making the opposition's scrutiny of the event understandable. Party leaders have criticized the government's decision to proceed with such a large gathering, arguing that it is inappropriate while the state continues to face disaster-related challenges.
