Congress MP Advocates for Strategic Autonomy

On Thursday, Congress MP Manish Tewari expressed his support for the Indian government's balanced stance regarding the ongoing conflict in West Asia. He emphasized that historically, India has played a limited role in this region and should prioritize its strategic autonomy. Speaking about the escalating tensions among Iran, Israel, and the United States, Tewari noted that given the complexity and scale of the crisis, New Delhi's cautious diplomatic approach is appropriate.

Multiple Conflicts in the Region

Tewari highlighted that the region is not witnessing a single war but rather multiple conflicting struggles. He pointed out that the situation between Israel and Iran, along with the U.S. siding with one party, is not merely a Middle Eastern issue but one that does not directly involve India. He stressed that India has historically remained on the periphery of the broader Middle East and should avoid entanglement in geopolitical conflicts that do not directly concern it.

Importance of Caution

Emphasizing the need for restraint, Tewari stated that India is taking the right steps by remaining vigilant. He added that being cautious is crucial, as it reflects the essence of strategic autonomy—protecting national interests while moving forward in the right direction. Since the onset of the crisis, India has consistently called for dialogue and diplomacy while balancing its interests across the region. Although New Delhi condemned Iranian attacks in the Gulf, it has also increased communication with Tehran to secure the flow of oil and gas through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route handling nearly one-fifth of global energy shipments.

Recent Developments in the Conflict

The conflict escalated on February 28 when the U.S. and Israel conducted coordinated strikes inside Iran, targeting several locations. In retaliation, Tehran attacked military bases linked to Washington and Jerusalem in the Gulf region, raising fears of a larger regional conflict. Meanwhile, India is closely monitoring the instability in the Gulf, as it poses risks to global supply chains, energy security, and the safety of Indian citizens residing and working in the area.
