Congress MP Raises Alarm Over Threats to Muslims in Delhi Ahead of Eid
Concerns Raised by Congress MP
On Wednesday, Congress Member of Parliament Mohammad Jawaid expressed his concerns in a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, highlighting that Muslims residing in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, are facing open threats and hateful rhetoric as Eid approaches amidst rising tensions in the area.
Jawaid pointed out a perceived bias in police responses, suggesting that this has emboldened individuals attempting to disrupt communal harmony.
This letter follows the tragic death of Tarun Bhutolia, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a clash on March 4, which erupted after a water balloon thrown by an 11-year-old girl struck a Muslim woman below.
The altercation escalated tensions between neighboring families of different faiths, leading to protests that resulted in property damage and the deployment of police and paramilitary forces.
Local Muslim residents have also reported threats of violence during the upcoming Eid celebrations.
In his correspondence to the home minister, Jawaid stated that the Muslim community in Uttam Nagar is experiencing “open threats, intimidation, and a systematic attempt to instill fear in their daily lives.”
A call for slaughter of Muslims on Eid in Uttam Nagar, Delhi and inaction by @DelhiPolice is highly alarming.

The MP representing Kishanganj in Bihar emphasized that the ongoing situation is not merely a law-and-order issue but reflects a troubling pattern of targeted hostility, raising serious concerns about the state's commitment to protecting all citizens equally.
He remarked, “Public threats, inflammatory slogans, and the spread of hate-filled content have fostered an environment where certain citizens feel unsafe in the capital.”
Jawaid urged Shah to acknowledge the gravity of the situation and ensure accountability for any failures in maintaining public order. He also called for the Delhi Police to take decisive and impartial action against those inciting hatred or attempting to escalate communal tensions.
Furthermore, he requested “visible and effective” protection for vulnerable community members to help restore their confidence. “An independent review of police actions is necessary to address concerns regarding bias or inaction,” he added.
In his letter, he cautioned that any silence or delay from the state during such critical moments sends a dangerous message that intimidation can replace law, and fear can overshadow rights. “This cannot be permitted in a constitutional democracy,” he stated.
Jawaid shared the letter on social media, noting that it had garnered signatures from several opposition legislators, including those from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the Samajwadi Party.
Adjournment Motion in Lok Sabha
Earlier on the same day, Jawaid announced that he had submitted an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to address the “alarming situation in Uttam Nagar and the recent arrests related to an iftar gathering on the banks of the Ganga.”
He referred to the arrest of 14 Muslims in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, who were detained for allegedly offending Hindu sentiments after organizing an iftar party on a boat and consuming chicken biryani.
The arrests followed the circulation of a video showing the gathering, which prompted a police complaint from Rajat Jaiswal, the local BJP youth wing leader, who claimed the event hurt Hindu religious sentiments. Jaiswal alleged that the individuals had thrown meat remnants into the Ganga, a river of significant religious importance to Hindus.
Jawaid emphasized that Iftar is a peaceful and integral religious observance during Ramadan, and criminalizing such gatherings indicates a “clear misuse of law and reflects a pattern of targeting minorities under the guise of enforcement.”
