Congress MP Takes Action Against Union Minister

On Friday, KC Venugopal, a Congress MP and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, introduced a privilege motion against Union Minister Jitendra Singh. Venugopal accused Singh of deliberately misleading Parliament. He urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to initiate proceedings against the minister for this alleged breach of privilege. In his notice to the Speaker, Venugopal raised the issue under Rule 222 of the Lok Sabha's rules and procedures.

According to Venugopal, during the discussion on the Lok Exam Amendment Bill, 2026, on July 29, Singh stated that it had been repeatedly clarified that no gunfire occurred during the student protests in Delhi on July 20, asserting that only tear gas was used. Venugopal contended that this statement contradicts the actual events, as gunfire did occur, and the injured individual is still receiving treatment.

The Congress leader's notice claims that the minister provided false information, misleading the House. He emphasized that misleading the House by a minister constitutes a breach of privilege, and it is the minister's responsibility to verify facts before presenting them in the House. Venugopal has requested the Lok Sabha Speaker to commence privilege proceedings and refer the matter to the Privilege Committee for investigation and necessary action.
