Political Tensions Rise in Assam

Jorhat, March 31: On Tuesday, Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi launched a fierce critique against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, challenging his previous comments regarding justice for cultural figure Zubeen Garg. Gogoi also raised new concerns about land ownership allegedly connected to the Chief Minister's family.

Gogoi referenced Sarma's earlier statement, questioning, “The Chief Minister had asserted that if justice for Zubeen Garg was not served, voters should reconsider their support for him. Now, he is questioning us. Can he clarify if justice has indeed been served?”

Earlier that day, during the unveiling of the BJP’s Sankalp Patra at Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati, Sarma accused the Congress of “politicizing” Garg’s legacy for electoral advantage in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Sarma mentioned a political consultancy named “Inclusive Mind,” alleging that a viral video showed its members advising the Congress to frequently highlight the Garg issue as part of their campaign strategy.

“If I am elected Chief Minister again, we will take action against all members of Inclusive Mind for their conspiracy,” Sarma stated to the media.

In response, Gogoi shifted the discussion to what he termed the “real issues,” asserting that the Congress would soon reveal information regarding land associated with the Chief Minister and his family.

“Everyone in Assam knows how land is being acquired under the name of the Chief Minister’s family. We will soon present details about nearly 12,000 bighas of land linked to Himanta Biswa Sarma and his relatives,” he claimed.

Gogoi also addressed accusations from the BJP regarding his alleged failure to report properties in Pakistan and London to the Election Commission, labeling them as politically motivated attacks.

“These allegations are unfounded and intended to mislead the public. Our focus remains on addressing genuine issues affecting the people of Assam,” he asserted.

In a pointed statement, Gogoi indicated that scrutiny of the Chief Minister would intensify. “The ground beneath the Chief Minister is starting to tremble. The truth will emerge, and the public will witness the reality,” he concluded.
