New Delhi, Oct 12: Following his recent termination from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has been charged with sexual harassment and for insulting a woman's modesty.

The FIR was filed based on a complaint from the chief security officer of the university on October 11, as confirmed by Delhi Police officials on Monday.

A case has been initiated against Akoijam, who represents Inner Manipur, after the complaint was lodged by JNU's chief security officer, according to police reports.

The FIR was recorded at the Vasant Kunj North police station on Sunday, citing sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv), and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertain to sexual harassment and actions meant to insult a woman's modesty, among other offenses. An investigation is currently underway.

In response to his dismissal on Friday, Akoijam described the action as a "witch hunt" and asserted that he was not given a chance to address the committee's conclusions.

Akoijam, who was a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems within JNU's School of Social Sciences, was dismissed on October 9 after an inquiry into the sexual harassment allegations, which he has denied.

Reports indicate that at least 11 female students lodged complaints against him in May, alleging that he invited them to his campus residence under the guise of meetings or gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them.

Additionally, some students claimed he made lewd and inappropriate comments during class.
