Imphal, Sept 20: Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a Congress MP and professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), has publicly addressed the sexual harassment allegations leveled against him, firmly denying claims of a private gathering involving 11 students at his residence.
In response to reports from two national news channels, Akoijam clarified that only two students from his recent teaching batch visited him to assist with some tasks, and they later shared a meal with him, his wife, and staff.
“These two students are respectable and sincere individuals whom I know well,” he stated, emphasizing that there were no complaints from them.
Previously, Akoijam had dismissed the allegations and criticized the media's portrayal of the situation, labeling the dissemination of unverified claims as unethical and condemning what he referred to as a “media trial.”
In his latest remarks, he asserted that the truth will emerge through the legal process. “The court will reveal the facts. Just wait and see,” he remarked.
This statement follows allegations made by 11 JNU students, which have prompted an investigation by the university's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC).
The unproven allegations reportedly involve claims of inappropriate behavior and comments during academic sessions, including viva examinations, as well as other alleged interactions with students.
The controversy has escalated, with student organizations calling for a prompt inquiry and raising concerns about the university's handling of the situation.
Additionally, the Delhi Commission for Women has requested information from JNU regarding the complaints and the actions taken in response.
The university administration has assured that the matter will be addressed in accordance with established rules and procedures, with the ICC overseeing the investigation.
