Congress MP Akoijam Under Investigation for Sexual Harassment

New Delhi: Following his recent termination from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Congress Member of Parliament Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has been charged with sexual harassment and insulting a woman's modesty, as confirmed by officials from the Delhi Police.

The First Information Report (FIR) was filed based on a complaint from the university's chief security officer on October 11, according to police reports released on Monday.

Akoijam, who served as a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems within JNU's School of Social Sciences, was dismissed on October 9 after an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment, which he has refuted.

Reports indicate that at least 11 female students lodged complaints against him in May, claiming he invited them to his residence under the guise of meetings and attempted to sexually harass them. Some students also reported that he made lewd and inappropriate comments during classes.

The police have registered a case against Akoijam, who represents Inner Manipur, following the complaint from the chief security officer of JNU.

The FIR was filed at the Vasant Kunj North police station on Sunday, citing sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv), and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which address sexual harassment and actions intended to insult a woman's modesty, among other offenses. An investigation is currently underway, police stated.

In response to his dismissal, Akoijam described the action as a witch hunt, asserting that he was not afforded a chance to address the committee's conclusions.
