Congress Leaders Strategize for Assam Assembly Elections
Congress Leadership Meets Assam Unit
New Delhi, May 31: Today, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former party leader Rahul Gandhi convened with Assam party leaders to strategize for the upcoming Assembly elections next year. They expressed optimism about the party's potential to displace the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government.
This meeting marked the first engagement between the top Congress officials and the Assam unit following the recent leadership change, which saw Gaurav Gogoi appointed as the new state party chief. Sources indicate that both Kharge and Gandhi encouraged the leaders to collaborate effectively, emphasizing unity and strength to win over the electorate and remove the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from power. They criticized the Assam government as ‘arrogant and corrupt.’
Also present at the gathering were AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal and Jitendra Singh, the general secretary responsible for Assam, at the party's new headquarters, Indira Bhawan.
Gandhi shared images from the meeting on Facebook, stating, "Today, under the leadership of President Mallikarjun Kharge-ji, I met with members of the newly-formed Assam Pradesh Committee at the Congress headquarters, Indira Bhawan," in a post written in Hindi.
In a post on X, Venugopal remarked, "Under the leadership of INC President Mallikarjun Kharge-ji and LoP Rahul Gandhi-ji, we held a meeting with the newly appointed Assam PCC leadership team to outline our plans for the upcoming year."
After the meeting, Gogoi expressed, "This was an inspiring moment for me as the Assam (Congress) president. I received guidance from the top leadership, which strengthened my commitment to advance the organization with renewed energy. The target set by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, LoP Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, and Jitendra Singh is Mission 2026. Our goal is to eliminate the government that engages in corruption, looting, and communal politics in Assam," he stated.
