Congress Leader Addresses Allegations of Factionalism

Pargat Singh, a prominent Congress leader, has refuted claims of factionalism within the Punjab Congress, asserting that differences in opinion are a natural aspect of democracy and can be resolved through dialogue. In a conversation with a news outlet, Singh emphasized that there are no factions within the party, criticizing the media for portraying routine discussions among leaders as internal conflicts. He stated, "Firstly, there are no factions. Nowadays, if someone shares a cup of tea with another, it is portrayed as political maneuvering, which is simply not the case. Disagreements are part of democracy."

Internal Democracy in Congress vs. Other Parties

Singh highlighted that the Congress party practices internal democracy, unlike the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), where he believes leaders do not express dissent openly. He remarked, "In the BJP, nothing moves without the approval of Amit Shah and Modi. I do not consider that democracy. In the AAP, no one can speak without Kejriwal's consent. True democracy requires internal democracy. Yes, sometimes we may speak a bit too freely." He added that Punjab is at a critical juncture where effective governance is essential for progress, stating, "There is no room for experimentation with the state."

Resolving Complaints Within the Party

When asked if the issue would be resolved during the visit of the party's Punjab in-charge, Singh expressed confidence that the Congress leadership would address any grievances. He mentioned, "The in-charge meets with everyone and should meet with all. If there are complaints, that’s why the system exists. I believe he will certainly pay attention to those complaints, as will the party high command."

Recent Developments in Punjab Congress

Tensions escalated following a significant meeting called by former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi at his residence in Morinda on July 4. Several senior leaders, including Bharat Bhushan Ashu, attended and voiced their dissent against Warring, demanding his removal from the Punjab Congress presidency and proposing Channi as a candidate to lead the party in the elections. They urged the party high command to reconsider recent organizational appointments in Punjab, claiming that under Channi's leadership, the party could regain power.

Social Media Activity and Human Rights Concerns

Earlier, on Monday, senior Congress leader and Gurudaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa shared a photo with several Congress leaders alongside former Chief Minister Channi, suggesting a faction within the state unit led by Channi. Meanwhile, Singh opposed the removal of the film 'Satluj' from an OTT platform, arguing that films depicting alleged human rights violations should not be banned.
