Urgent Call for Action Amid Flood Crisis

Amaravati, August 2 - Y.S. Sharmila, the president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), has called for the immediate rehabilitation of individuals displaced by the recent floods in the Godavari River. She criticized the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led government for focusing more on praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi than addressing the hardships faced by flood-affected families. Sharmila stated that over 20,000 people have been displaced due to the floods and accused the government of failing to provide timely rehabilitation and relief measures despite prior warnings about the flooding.

In a press release, she remarked, “The government has shown more concern for praising Prime Minister Modi than for the affected individuals.” She highlighted that entire villages are submerged, thousands have lost everything, and nearly 100 villages are living under the threat of flooding.

Sharmila questioned the government's preparedness, asking why residents of vulnerable villages were not evacuated to safer locations beforehand and why a rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) package was not provided despite knowledge of potential flood zones. She expressed concern that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government seems more worried about criticism of Prime Minister Modi than the suffering of flood victims. She posed the question of whether those hurt by criticism of Modi can truly empathize with the pain of displaced families or hear the cries of those forced to flee their inundated villages.

The APCC president urged the government to ensure that affected families receive shelter, food, essential supplies, and medical assistance at relief centers until the flood situation stabilizes.
