Congress Leader Criticizes Court's Decision on Unnao Rape Case

In a recent statement, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate condemned the Delhi High Court's decision to suspend the sentence of Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the accused in the 2017 Unnao rape case. She raised concerns about the implications of such a ruling on justice for women in India. The CBI has announced plans to challenge this decision in the Supreme Court, emphasizing the need for accountability in such serious cases. This situation has sparked significant public outrage and calls for a reevaluation of the judicial process regarding sexual assault cases.

Congress Leader's Strong Reaction to Court Ruling

Supriya Shrinate, a prominent Congress leader, has expressed her strong disapproval of the Delhi High Court's decision to suspend the sentence of Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the accused in the 2017 Unnao rape case, and grant him bail. Speaking on Wednesday, Shrinate questioned, "How can a person convicted of murder and gang rape, who was serving a life sentence, be released after just six years? What kind of justice is this? Will our daughters ever receive justice in this country?"

She further stated, "When the victim and her mother were peacefully protesting at India Gate, the Delhi police treated them with such brutality and inhumanity. This is a slap in the face of a civilized society. I urge the court to take suo motu cognizance of this matter and overturn this decision." As a woman and a mother, she appealed for the court to reconsider the case.

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has announced its intention to challenge the Delhi High Court's ruling in the Supreme Court. After reviewing the order issued by the High Court bench, the agency has decided to file a Special Leave Petition (SLP) as soon as possible. An official confirmed that the CBI is set to contest the suspension of Sengar's sentence and the granting of bail.

The accused had also filed an appeal along with his bail application, which was strongly opposed by both the CBI and the victim's family. The CBI presented detailed written arguments against the petition. The bench, comprising Justices Subramaniam Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, granted bail to Kuldeep Singh Sengar on the condition that he deposits a bail bond of ₹15 lakh.
