Congress Leader Accuses Assam CM of Seeking AIUDF Support for Rajya Sabha Nomination
Allegations Against Assam's Chief Minister
Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, has accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of allegedly soliciting support from the AIUDF for his Rajya Sabha nomination. Gogoi asserts that this action reveals the power-centric nature of BJP's politics. He pointed out that Sarma, who has long labeled the AIUDF as a communal party, is now compelled to seek their backing to maintain his political standing.
AIUDF's Involvement in Rajya Sabha Nominations
Gogoi further claimed that three AIUDF legislators—Karimuddin Barbhuiya, Nizamuddin Chaudhary, and Zakir Hussain Laskar—have signed the nomination papers for NDA candidate Pramod Boro from the UPPPL. He sharply criticized the Chief Minister, stating that Sarma has consistently incited fear among the people of Assam regarding the AIUDF, often using polarizing terms like 'Miya' and 'Osinaki' in his speeches to target minority communities.
Critique of Divisive Politics
Gogoi accused the Chief Minister of actively promoting societal division through aggressive eviction campaigns and bulldozer politics. He noted that as the BJP faced a shortage of majority for a third Rajya Sabha seat, the AIUDF, previously deemed communal, suddenly became acceptable to the ruling party, highlighting the purely power-driven nature of their politics.
Questioning Political Contradictions
Raising questions about the political contradictions, Gogoi asked why, if the AIUDF is truly a threat to Assam, the BJP felt the need to rely on their support to ensure the victory of NDA candidate Pramod Boro. He further alleged that the BJP has maintained covert ties with the AIUDF for a long time, suggesting that the public exchanges of insults between the two parties are part of a calculated political strategy to mislead the public.
