Key Meeting to Enhance Party Organization

Congress Initiates Strategic Discussions to Strengthen Organizational Structure

On March 27, district presidents from across the nation will convene in Delhi for a crucial meeting aimed at revitalizing the Congress party's organizational structure. This significant gathering took place on Tuesday, attended by party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, along with many other national officials. The objective is to formulate a strategy through discussions with district heads over the course of three days.

Following the meeting on March 28, district presidents will reconvene on April 3. Due to the Navratri festival and Eid, there will be a pause in meetings during this period. The party is currently focused on strengthening its organizational framework, although discussions regarding central-level strategies have yet to take place.

Deliberations on Contesting Elections Independently

According to sources, there is also an ongoing discussion within the party about contesting elections independently. Several leaders advocate for empowering the party to fight elections alone in various states, suggesting that post-election alliances should be considered later. In Bihar, the party has initiated a foot march addressing unemployment and migration, which was also a topic of discussion in the meeting. While the party remains cautious in its public statements, the idea of pursuing an independent strategy, particularly in Hindi-speaking states, is gaining traction.

It is anticipated that after the district presidents' meeting, discussions will continue at the upcoming All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting next month, where organizational changes and the independent strategy will be deliberated. Following a series of electoral defeats, questions regarding the party's organizational structure have emerged.

Party president Kharge has emphasized the necessity of streamlining the organization. He had previously established a committee to explore ways to strengthen the party at the district and block levels, which has submitted its recommendations. The primary challenge remains the weakness of the organization at the grassroots level, particularly in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where alliances have led to a decline in the party's strength. The effectiveness of alliances in other states is also being questioned.

Smaller parties have begun to undervalue the Congress party, presenting a significant challenge for the party to enhance its organizational strength to facilitate a return to power. Internal factionalism is a major contributor to organizational weakness. While the leadership is tasked with addressing factionalism, it continues to pose a challenge. Although senior leaders have discussed various issues, factionalism remains a persistent concern.

In recent years, the Congress has held numerous meetings aimed at strengthening the organization, from the Udaipur resolution in 2022 to the Belgaum meeting earlier this year. Despite extensive discussions, tangible changes have yet to materialize. Following Tuesday's meeting, it appears unlikely that any significant transformations will occur within the party.
