Congress Initiates Candidate Applications for 2026 Assam Assembly Elections
Congress Prepares for Upcoming Elections
Guwahati, Jan 5: On Monday, the Assam Congress officially commenced its preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections by launching the candidate application process at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati. This move indicates the party's organizational efforts as the elections approach.
The application period will be open until January 20, inviting candidates from all Assembly constituencies to apply for party tickets by submitting the required form along with a non-refundable fee of Rs 50,000. Interested individuals can find the application forms on the party's official website, as informed by party workers.
Bipul Gogoi, the general secretary (organisation) of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), was the first to submit his application, seeking the Congress nomination for the No. 119 Tingkhong Legislative Assembly constituency.
After filing his application, he expressed optimism, stating that the electorate is eager for political change under the leadership of APCC president Gaurav Gogoi.
“The people of Assam are looking for change under Gaurav Gogoi’s leadership. They will vote to safeguard democracy and the interests of their constituency,” he remarked.
Another candidate, Supreme Court advocate Abu Taher Ali Bepari, has applied for the No. 8 Dhubri constituency, which is situated along the India–Bangladesh border.
Bepari noted that the electoral battle in Lower Assam will focus on opposing the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), which he referred to as the BJP’s “B-team.”
“In Lower Assam, our contest is not against the BJP but against the AIUDF. Since the latter is not a significant factor this election, we anticipate a substantial victory under Gaurav Gogoi’s leadership,” he stated, mentioning that the constituency has over 31,000 voters.
As the application process begins, the Congress party has intensified its criticism of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.
Dhubri Lok Sabha MP Rakibul Hussain asserted that voters statewide are “completely disillusioned” with the current administration and are determined to oust it in the upcoming 2026 elections.
During a press conference in Kokrajhar on Sunday, following discussions with district Congress workers and representatives from various social and student organizations, Hussain revealed that the party has formed several committees to enhance its election strategy. These include groups focused on manifesto development, campaigning, coordination, and publicity.
“These committees will interact with the public, address their concerns, and devise a solid plan to defeat the ruling government,” Hussain added.
With the candidate application process officially underway, the Congress party has entered election mode, establishing a foundation for both organizational strengthening and its campaign narrative in anticipation of the crucial 2026 Assembly elections.
