Congress Prepares for Upcoming Assembly Elections

Following a meeting of the Congress Central Election Committee (CEC), Gaurav Gogoi, the president of Assam Congress, announced that the party has nearly completed its candidate list for the upcoming assembly elections, with 95 percent finalized. He indicated that the list is expected to be released by tomorrow, and discussions will soon take place to finalize the remaining seats.

Gogoi stated, "We have discussed 95 percent of the seats in Assam. The list may be published by tomorrow, and we will soon deliberate on the remaining seats."

On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, along with the party's national president Mallikarjun Kharge, chaired the meeting of the Congress Central Election Committee ahead of the Assam assembly elections. In a separate development, Congress received a significant boost on Monday when Jayanta Khaund, the former national finance secretary of the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), joined the party along with several other leaders.

Khaund was formally welcomed into the Congress at the party headquarters in the presence of senior leaders, including Jitendra Singh Alwar, the AICC general secretary in charge of Assam, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister and senior observer for Congress in Assam D.K. Shivakumar, Gaurav Gogoi, and national secretary Manoj Chauhan. While welcoming Khaund, Gogoi remarked that the inclusion of grassroots leaders like him reflects the growing public discontent against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's leadership in Assam. He emphasized that a wave of political change is underway in the state.
