Political Uncertainty in Kerala
The national spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shahzad Poonawala, expressed on Wednesday that the Congress party is in a state of confusion regarding its candidate for the Chief Minister position in Kerala. Despite the election results being announced on May 4, the Congress has yet to make any official declaration regarding its Chief Ministerial nominee. Speaking to a news agency, Poonawala criticized Congress, stating that even after nine days, the party remains completely uncertain. He noted that although Congress secured an absolute majority in Kerala, confusion persists, and he has even heard that there might be five Chief Ministers in five years. He pointed out that similar uncertainty can be observed in Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh.
Congress Leadership Anticipates Announcement
Meanwhile, Kerala Congress President Suni Joseph mentioned on Wednesday that an announcement regarding the next Chief Minister is expected by this afternoon, as discussions within the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) are nearing completion. Speaking to reporters, Joseph stated that party leaders and workers are awaiting the final decision from the Congress high command. He expressed optimism that the name of the Chief Minister would be revealed today, indicating that all discussions have been finalized. He added that the announcement would be made from Delhi, noting that there might have been a slight delay due to Sonia Gandhi's hospitalization.
Ongoing Discussions for Chief Ministerial Candidate
These statements come ten days after the UDF, led by Congress, aimed to secure a decisive mandate in the upcoming 2026 assembly elections, amidst ongoing uncertainty regarding the Chief Ministerial candidate in Kerala. The Congress high command is consulting with senior leaders from Kerala in New Delhi to finalize the candidate for the Chief Minister position. Key contenders for the role include Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan, Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala.
