Congress Suffers Defeat in Assam Assembly Elections
In the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the Indian National Congress (INC) experienced a significant defeat, allowing the BJP-led NDA to secure a strong mandate to maintain power. Gaurav Gogoi, the president of Assam Congress, who lost his seat in Jorhat to BJP's Hitendra Nath Goswami by a considerable margin, held a press conference on Tuesday to accept responsibility for the party's loss. Gogoi expressed gratitude towards Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Jitendra Singh, and other Congress leaders, acknowledging that the party did not achieve the expected number of seats. He emphasized their commitment to contributing to Assam's development both inside and outside the assembly, stating, 'We will always stand with the common people of Assam.'

Gogoi further remarked that the public has not accepted the election results. He had anticipated a close contest, but many outcomes were not as expected. On Saturday (May 9), he plans to reach out to all newly elected legislators. He clearly stated, 'As the captain, I take responsibility for this defeat.' As the state Congress president, he acknowledged his moral obligation for the loss.
The Congress leader extended his best wishes to the BJP and its leadership, expressing hope that the government would address various public issues. He criticized the BJP government for failing to deliver on expectations, citing artificial floods as an example. Gogoi also expressed hope that the government would not repeat past mistakes of troubling the public and engaging in corruption. Despite not securing the anticipated seats, he reaffirmed their duty to voice the people's concerns and uphold the Constitution.

He stated that if the government makes mistakes, they will fearlessly raise their voices in the interest of the public. Although their seats are fewer, their morale remains high. In the coming days, they will convene a meeting with their victorious candidates to discuss the election process and adherence to all regulations, as well as explore ways to strengthen the party.
