Congress Faces Internal Strife Amid Haryana Rajya Sabha Elections
Internal Conflicts Emerge in Congress During Haryana Elections
The recent Rajya Sabha elections in Haryana have once again highlighted significant rifts within the Congress party. Internal factionalism has severely undermined the party's prospects, inadvertently benefiting an independent candidate. Nevertheless, Congress managed to secure a seat in Haryana. Out of the 90 members in the Haryana Assembly, two INLD legislators abstained from voting, while five votes—four from Congress and one from BJP—were declared invalid. This reduced the effective competition to just 28 votes, with the threshold for victory set at 28.

BJP candidate Sanjay Bhatia easily won the first seat with 39 first-preference votes, gaining an additional 11 votes. The real contest was for the second seat, where Congress's Karamveer Singh Baudh secured the necessary 28 votes, while independent candidate Satish Nandal trailed by 16 votes. However, the calculations reveal how close the race was. If Bhatia's extra 11 votes were transferred as second-preference votes, Nandal could have reached 27 votes—just one vote shy of victory. Had another Congress legislator cross-voted or if the BJP's invalid vote had been valid, the independent candidate could have achieved an unexpected win.

In response to the election results, Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda congratulated the people of Haryana, stating that every citizen deserves recognition, as do the legislators who exposed various conspiracies and defended democracy. He criticized the BJP for employing unethical tactics, claiming that such political maneuvering for a single Rajya Sabha seat has not been witnessed elsewhere in the country. Hooda accused the BJP of using every possible method of coercion, temptation, punishment, and division, asserting that negotiations and pressure were applied.
He emphasized that the Congress party and its legislators worked to prevent bribery, and when that failed, attempts were made to stifle democracy under the cover of night. He declared that the four votes invalidated during the counting process were all legitimate, marking a victory for democracy. Hooda vowed to reach every corner of Haryana to protect democratic values. He also stated that legislators who compromised their integrity would be held accountable not only for themselves but also for future generations in front of the people of Haryana. The Congress party plans to take strict action against those legislators.
